Stamford Quarter Vision
In the past decade the centre of Altrincham has been transformed. It has seen substantial investment in the town centre, alongside major improvements such as Market House and Altrincham Market. Building on this success, Trafford Council and Bruntwood Works joined forces to acquire Stamford Quarter and Clarendon House in 2019.
Since then, we have been working on a vision for Stamford Quarter, building on the strong foundation and creating a new liveable neighbourhood that benefits the community, brings variety and reinvigorates the town centre retail and leisure offer, and provides long-term sustainable economic growth. Before submitting planning for aspects of the vision, we’re delighted to share our thoughts with you for your consideration.
The principal proposals are:
Retail and leisure – improving the traditional retail offer with a mix of uses such as cafes, restaurants
and ‘pop-up’ independents – making it different to the mainstream offer.
More town centre living – Repurposing Clarendon House, Sunningdale House and Station House,
providing a mix of retail, commercial and residential units.
Commercial spaces – repurposing the large empty retail units formerly occupied by Debenhams and Rackhams to create new, modern and flexible workspace.
Improving streets and spaces – Extend the high quality ‘public realm’ already seen in the town
through Stamford Quarter and create Stamford Square on the corner of George Street.
Stamford Square will be a flexible events space with moveable furniture, seating and tree planting.
We want to create opportunities for retail activity, cafes and restaurants to ‘spill out’ into the
public realm and provide more seating and space for shoppers to enjoy the town centre.
Sustainability at the core – Sustainability is at the heart of these proposals, which seek to
maximise the benefit of the town centre location, next to excellent public transport links.
